Striking London underground workers gave their backing to the campaign against the official visit of Egyptian president Abdelfattah el-Sisi to UK yesterday. Activists from the RMT and TSSA unions on the picketline at London Bridge station added their names to a statement against the visit and urged other trade unionists to get involved in building the campaign. Lynda Aitken from the RMT union said
We were horrified to learn the David Cameron has invited Sisi to London. We’re out on strike today to defend the tube service by protecting our conditions and passengers’ safety. Our colleagues in Egypt who strike or protest for their rights are getting shot at by the military and face jail and beatings. That’s why we’re backing this campaign.”
