Delegates at the annual conference of the PCS union which represents 300,000 government workers across the UK pledged their support for the international campaign in solidarity socialist activist Mahienour el-Masry, jailed for two years earlier this week for organising a protest. Activists from MENA Solidarity gathered signatures on a giant postcard calling for Mahienour’s release (above), and handed out hundreds of leaflets highlighting repression by Egypt’s military regime.
Other unions are also backing the campaign. Rob Copeland, International Officer for the lecturers’ union UCU, told Egypt Solidarity Initiative that activists will be able to collect solidarity materials from the union’s annual congress in Manchester next week. UCU is playing a key role in mobilising international solidarity with Egyptian students and lecturers facing repression. The union has produced 1000 copies of a new Egypt Solidarity briefing on the crackdown on campus in Egypt.
